Big Dance Royal Flash Mob

31 May 2011

While Big Dance 2012 is still a year away, the team haven’t been resting on their laurels after the success of the 2010 event, and in conjunction with students at the University of East London, organised a flash mob for the Queen outside Buckingham Palace on 9 May, in celebration of Royal Patronage of the performing atrs for young people.

Big Dance is the world’s biggest celebration of dance and dancing and will take place across the UK between 7-15 July 2012. It is part of London Festival 2012, the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad.

The Big Dance Royal Flash Mob choreography was devised by Anna Buonomo with a sound mix provided by Michael Floyd of M.O. Creatives Ltd as part of a 12-week Big Dance module for 2nd year Dance: Urban Practice students at University of East London. Using the theme of Romeo and Juliet as their inspiration, the students explored romance through urban dance techniques starting from the steps of The Queen Victoria Memorial.

Students taking part in the impromptu event were asked to research and develop the production of a large scale site-specific piece of choreography suitable for a high impact Flash Mob. Over 100 dancers took part with additional dancers joining the performance from dance groups and training schools across London including: Creative Academy, Middlesex University, London Contemporary Dance School, Havering Schools, The Turbelles and Ultimate Dance NRG.
