Call for disabled people to dance
13 September 2011Open Arts’ Luminous Soul Dance Project for disabled people is looking for new recruits in Derry/ Londonderry. On Sat 1st Oct 2011 a dance audition for disabled people will be held at The Playhouse Theatre, Derry with Caroline Bowditch from Scottish Dance Theatre.
This event is a part of the Luminous Soul Dance Project and represents the final opportunity for people in Derry to get involved in this groundbreaking project which has been running throughout Northern Ireland for 2 years now.
Many people find themselves excluded from dance classes on the basis of their disability or sensory impairment. If this has been your experience, then Open Arts’ Luminous Soul Dance Project is designed for you! It was created to tackle head-on the fact that there are no dancers with a disability working professionally in Northern Ireland.
Since August 2009, Luminous Soul has been searching out disabled adults throughout Northen Ireland who have an interest in contemporary dance. These adults have been taught in regular classes by some of Northern Ireland’s top dance companies such as Echo Echo, Maiden Voyage and PonyDance.
Luminous Soul has also to date, held 2 residentials where our team of dancers have been given specialist attention by some of the best disabled dancers and choreographers in the world.
All of these opportunities are free of charge to Luminous Souls and support workers are supplied to accommodate the disabled participants. One participant wrote after a residential: ‘this was a great experience for me as a dancer… I grew as a person during this week’. Luminous Souls are currently very much looking forward to our next residential from the 13th to 18th November with Marc Brew.
Victoria Geelan, participant in the programme says: ‘I have never felt as free as when I am dancing. Luminous Soul is a great project to be a part of’.
So if you are a disabled person with an interest in dance and would love the opportunity to work with some of the leading international companies in integrated dance, such as Candoco, Marc Brew, Claire Cunningham and Scottish Dance Theatre, don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity.
