Mythical, Wild and Human in Wales

An exhibition of masks inspired by the carved stone heads of St David’s Bishops Palace will be launched at Oriel Y Parc, St Davids, Pembrokeshire on Friday 13 November from 6 - 7.30pm. The exhibition will remain open until 15 January 2010.
Mythical, wild and human, is part of a four-year programme of celebratory arts projects centered on eight historic Cadw sites across Wales including St David’s Bishops Palace. The Cauldrons and Furnaces initiative, which Cadw, the Welsh Assembly Government’s historic environment service, is delivering in partnership with the Arts Council of Wales over four years has been funded by Cadw and Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity whose role is to promote long-lasting and wide-ranging benefits from the 2012 Olympic Games.
Working with artists from spacetocreate community arts, pupils from Ysgol Bro Dewiand Ysgol Dewi Sant created a set of masks,inspired by the unique set of 150 carvedstone corbels that adorn the Bishops Palace,depicting mythical beasts, wild animalsand human heads.These masks will act as the starting point foran ambitious programme of celebrations inSt David’s leading up to the London Olympicsin 2012.
Wayne Evans, Cadw’s Visitor Services Manager said, “The aim of the Cauldrons And Furnaces programme of events and activities such as Mythical, Wild and Human in St David’s is to inspire and engage with the people and communities of Wales to deliver a lasting legacy of creativity beyond the next four years and beyond the Olympics themselves.”
Pip Lewis from spacetocreate community arts said, “Visitors are welcome to come along, find out how the masks were made, learn more about the project and how to get involved. The masks will act as a common thread running through a series of linked community arts and celebratory projects over the years running up to the Olympic Games in 2012.”
