London: Big Dance


Big Dance is the ultimate London dance experience for 2010 and 2012.

Big Dance is a biennial pan London celebration of dance and dancing with nine days of dance events in unusual places throughout the city - shops, parks, galleries and museums - showcasing the diversity of dance styles and cultural attractions across the capital.

Most importantly everyone is invited to join in.


The programme will promote London as a world class centre for high quality dance to an international audience and the aim is that thousands of people will be inspired to make dance a part of their lives beyond 2012.

Big Dance 2010 saw 850 events happen across the capital with 1.2 million people involved.

•    The Big Dance Bus and Bubble toured the capital, inspiring people to watch and take part in dance
•    650 schools signed up for the Big Dance Schools Pledge – which involved doing an extra 20 minutes of dance a day and a World Record attempt
•    The Big Dance Hubs co-ordinated 100s of events for Londoners locally
•    The Big World Dance offered 70 workshops across London and saw almost 1,000 people dance their way from Southbank Centre to Trafalgar Square for the finale of Big Dance 2010
•    Big Dance offered many opportunities for older dancers, including a performance involving 150 older people at the Southbank Centre.

Big Dance 2012 will take place across London from 7-15 July 2012 and includes a 7-week countdown to warm up the nation for Big Dance week. With a keynote commission by Wayne McGregor, it promises to be bigger and better than ever before!

The programme is being delivered through a partnership between the Greater London Authority and Arts Council England, London. The five Big Dance Hubs involved include East London Dance, English National Ballet, Greenwich Dance, Sadler's Wells and Siobhan Davies Dance. They will coordinate activity locally through a series of 'hubs' across the capital.


Legacy Trust UK has committed £2.89 million to the programme until 2012 to ensure it leaves a lasting legacy for participants across London.
