Lakes Alive comes to National Park’s 60th birthday party

Lakes Alive will be helping the Lake District National Park celebrate its 60th birthday at Brockhole on 13-14 August, with performances from street artists, storytellers and musicians – and everyone is invited to the party.

The family gala and garden party will feature Gary Bridgens, who will enchant and entertain the audience with his songs and lakeside tales.

The Fairly Famous Family will be there with Grow Your Own, a comedy gardening show including magic disappearing slugs, juggling with a sickle and razor sharp lemons, and the recreation of Peter Rabbit daring escape from Mr McGregor’s sack.

There will also be music from Speedy Pete the Keyboard King and a singalong to a new 60th birthday anthem. 

Julie Tait from Lakes Alive says “We are delighted to be part of the National Park’s 60th birthday celebrations.  Some great local acts are performing and Brockhole is a fantastic location to hold a birthday party so I hope lots of people will come along and join in the celebrations.“

Lakes Alive is Cumbria’s unique contribution to the Legacy Trust UK programme, which was set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
 
The party will also feature demonstrations of Westmorland Wrestling, a gurning competition, which anyone can take part in, and unfair games you can never win, but which will make you laugh.  

There will also be egg and spoon races, treasure hunts, a climbing wall and the chance to make a vegetable sculpture or write a poem for a Cumbria Chest of Time.

Richard Leafe Chief Executive of the Lake District National Park says, “Lakes Alive put on fantastic events, so we are really pleased that they were able to join us for our 60th birthday celebrations.  I think it will be a great event which everyone will enjoy.”

The Birthday party will take place at  Brockhole - The Lake District Visitor Centre, Windermere, Cumbria LA23 1LJ  from 2- 4.30 pm on Saturday 13  & Sunday 14  August.   The event is free, but parking charges will apply.

There will be other free activities running as part of the celebration each day from 11am, including a climbing wall, a treasure hunt and face painting.

Lakes Alive is created and directed by Kendal Arts International (KAI) with Manchester International Arts.  .

Lakes Alive’s summer season continues on 29 August at Maryport with to Groupe Puja from Spain and Argentina, who present K@osmos, a high octane show featuring live music, lights, dance, circus and bungee acrobatics.    

From 2-4 September Mintfest, Kendal’s International Festival of Street Arts, returns for its 5th year with a a world-class line-up of around 150 outdoor entertainers who will fill the town of Kendal with an intoxicating mix of dance, comedy, music, drama and magic.
